CSUN Drops Four-Set Decision at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Hailey Brockway's 20 kills led three CSUN players double digits, but the Matadors fell in four sets at Cal Poly in a Big West match on Saturday at Mott Athletics Center.
Cal Poly (6-6, 2-0 Big West) overcame a strong second-set response from CSUN (4-8, 0-2 Big West) and defeated the Matadors by the score of 25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19.
Brockway led CSUN with 20 kills (.155) along with nine digs, two blocks, and one ace. Senior Tatiana Turgeon matched her career-high with 11 kills for the second straight match. Turgeon hit .429 on 21 swings, while adding four blocks. Senior Julia Bazylevych came off the bench to add 10 kills (.269) and Audrey Nuckols chipped in eight kills (.227) and four blocks.
Senior setter Katie Kolar totaled 46 assists and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season, and senior libero Paige Sentes contributed 13 digs to surpass 1,400 career digs in her CSUN career (1,403).
Cal Poly overcame a strong second-set response from CSUN and defeated the Matadors 25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19 on Saturday at Mott Athletics Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN trailed by as many as six (13-7) in the opening set but trimmed Cal Poly's lead to 23-21 on an Audrey Nuckols kill before the Mustangs scored the final two points to take a 25-21 win.
The Matadors answered in the second set, overcoming an 18-12 deficit to take their first lead at 19-18 on a Bazylevych kill. CSUN closed the set on a 10-6 run, with Bazylevych, Nuckols, and Brockway delivering key kills in the 25-23 victory.

The third set was tightly contested, featuring eight ties and two lead changes. CSUN took a 23-22 lead on a Brockway kill, but Cal Poly scored four of the final five points to take the set 26-24.
Cal Poly carried the momentum into the fourth set, hitting .400 and building a 20-13 lead. CSUN battled back behind kills from Brockway and Turgeon but could not close the gap as the Mustangs finished the match with a 25-19 win.
Cal Poly was led by Kendall Beshear's 20 kills and Alexis Haury's 43 assists. The Mustangs hit .284 as a team compared with CSUN's .234.
HEAD COACH AQUILES MONTOYA SAID
"Tonight we tried something new and without a ton of preparation in it. I am really proud of how our team accepted the challenge and battled with a great Cal Poly team which hasn't lost a home Big West match in a very long time. Through tough moments we stayed together but Cal Poly was cleaner in the serve and pass game at the end of sets.
"This group knows what they have to do, and they can't wait to have their first home conference match against Long Beach State. We need all the support and fire we can to make sure we protect home court!"
