Kevin Smith will begin his first season as a men’s and women’s assistant coach track and field at CSUN in the Fall of 2021. He will work primarily with the distance runners and will serve as an assistant with the men’s and women’s cross country teams.
Smith comes to CSUN from Moorpark College where he served as a volunteer assistant coach with the track and field and cross country programs. He was awarded 2018 WSC and California Community College Association Cross Country Coach of the Year. His cross country teams at Moorpark finished third in the state with three athletes earning CCCAA All-American honors. Moopark reached third place in the CCCAA Championship and fifth in the CCCAA Southern California Championship during his tenure with the program.
As the cross country coach at Oak Park High School, Smith reestablished the program in 1985. During his tenure as head coach, the Eagles won a combined 21 Tri-Valley League titles, seven CIF SS runner-up trophies, seven CIF SS titles, seven California State Championship runner-up finishes, and four California State Championships.
In addition to cross-country excellence, Smith helped lead the Oak Park track and field teams to two CIF SS titles. Stepping down as a coach at Oak Park in 2010, Smith served as an assistant track and field coach at Cal Lutheran from 2011-13 and was an assistant cross country coach in 2013. He coached two national qualifiers in the high jump and two Regals qualified for the 2013 NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championship. He returned to coach Oak Park from 2014-15.
Since 1994, Smith has served as the lead instructor for the Los Angeles Olympic Foundation’s LA84 Coaching Education Program. A program that conducts clinics in track and field and cross country. The program develops training programs for sprints and relays. The program also creates and implements strategies for races and training plans. From 2002-10, he served as an Advisory Council Representative for the CIF Southern Section Track and Field section.
Smith is a member of the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame and the Oak Park High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
