A Silver Medalist in the shot put at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Joe Kovacs joined the CSUN Track & Field program as a volunteer assistant coach prior to the start of the 2016-17 season.Â
A former Penn State standout, Kovacs went 21.78m in the shot put in Brazil on his opening throw of the Finals to win the Silver Medal. He also won the 2015 World Championship with a throw of 21.93m and that year he set a new personal best of 22.56m in a meet in Monaco. That mark ranks eighth in American history.Â
With the Nittany Lions, Kovacs was a four-time All-American and two-time Big Ten Conference champion. He has also placed fourth in the event at the 2012 US Olympic Trials. He has also trained extensively with Art Venegas at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.Â
