CSUN Track & Field Boasts Four First-Place Finishes at Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field posted a total of four first-place finishes as the Matadors completed a two-day stay at UC San Diego's Triton Invitatinal on Saturday.Â
The Matador men's team boasted three first place victories in sprint events, led by James Crawford who won the 100m and 200m events while Walter Pierce took first in the 400m. Kyriaun Davis also claimed first in the shot put for CSUN.Â
TOP MEN'S PERFORMANCES
Crawford made a splash in his outdoor season debut at the Triton Invitational. He would win the 200m on Friday, finishing with a time of 21.00. Following Crawford, Pierce was tied for ninth place in the 200m followed by Wyatt Wiggins, Jr. in 12th place at 21.56. In the 100m, Crawford raced his way to first in the 100m on Saturday, beating the field with a time of 10.45 while Wiggins also competed in the event, posting a time of 10.83 to take 15th place.Â
Pierce won his first outdoor event of the season, taking first in the 400m with his time of 46.79. Jayden Smith set a PR in that event with his time of 48.27 to finish 14th.Â
In throws, Davis won his first event as a Matador in the shot put. He set a PR of 16.98m (55-8.5) to claim first place while Francisco Isiordia was fifth at 15.59m (51-1.75) and Tui Edwin was 10th at 15.09m (49-6.25). Davis also was 10th overall in the discus elite competition, setting a PR of 55.10m (180-9), which ranks eighth-best in school history.Â
Isaiah Butler was second in the discus with his best throw going for 53.44m (175-4). In the hammer, Tylor Connelly paced CSUN by setting a PR of 64.82m (212-8) to take third place. That toss ranks third-best in school history.Â
In jumps, Tzu-Ting Chan was second in the long jump with a leap of 7.10m (23-3.5). Jay Louison-Roe took second place in the triple jump with a mark of 15.34m (50-4) followed by Chan in 14th place with his leap of 13.90m (45-7.25). Two Matadors competed in the long jump elite event with Layne Buck taking seventh place at 6.84m (22-5.25) followed by Joey Nations in eighth place at 6.66m (21-10.25). Matthew Browner was tied for seventh place in the high jump after reaching 2.00m (6-6.75) while Aiydan Bague was 11th in the event at 1.90m (6-2.675).Â
In distance races, Ramiro Mateos took third place in the 3000m-steeplechase with a time of 9:28.34 while Diego Rodriguez was seventh at 9:42.65 and Omar Heredia was 13th with a PR of 9:59.14. Elijah Stenberg was one of eight to compete in the 1500m as he set a PR of 3:51.06 to finish third overall while Raul Verges was 12th at 3:55.77 and Cesar Cuevas was 15th with a PR of 3:57.27. Finally, Camilo Torres placed fifth in the 5000m, running a time of 14:44.40.Â
TOP WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES
CSUN's 4x400m team of Trystin Mitchell, Brianna Wells, Makyla Jones and Serena Grace placed second overall with a time of 3:42.93. The Matadors also had a strong showing in the 4x100m relay race with the quartet of Hannah Bridge, Amaya Rice, Jones and Grace taking third at 45.43.Â
In another second-place finish, Amani Britton was the runner up in the discus, posting a top throw of 48.43m (158-10).Â
Katherine Shipp-Davis also had a standout weekend for the Matadors in multiple events. In the shot put, Shipp-Davis finished third with a toss of 13.20m (43-3.75), which was just ahead of teammate Treasure Brown in fourth place at 13.16m (43-2.25). Shipp-Davis also took sixth place in the discus elite, setting a PR of 52.41m (171-11), which ranks seventh-best in school history.Â
In jumps, Camryn Harris placed fifth in the triple jump with her mark of 11.88m (38-11.75). The Matador trio of Jazmine Severo, Ashleigh Porter and Naomi Sachs posted a high jump mark of 1.63m (5-4.25) to place fifth. Chandler Smith was sixth in the long jump elite event with a leap of 5.67m (18-7.25) followed by Danielle Irvin in seventh place at 5.44m (17-10.25).Â
In other sprints, Grace was seventh in the 200m with her time of 24.26 while Jones came in eighth place with a time of 24.32 and Rice took 15th place by charting a time of 24.58. Grace also paced CSUN in the 400m by taking eighth place with a PR of 55.09.Â

CSUN returns to competition in two weeks for another busy weekend. The Matadors are set to participate in the Pacific Coast Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, on Thursday, April 16 while the team will send representatives to the Mt. SAC Relays from April 16-17 and to the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific, from April 16-18.Â

- Ja'Patrick Smith was 13th in the men's 800m, setting a PR of 1:53.82. Darrick Jacob, Jr. also set a PR in the event, runnng at 1:55.23 to place 19th.Â
- The Matador men were represented in the 4x400m with the distance group of Jacob, Verges, Smith and Adam Divinity were 15th with a time of 3:27.69.Â
- Ignacio posted a 16th-place finish in the men's shot put elite with a toss of 16.18m (53-1). Santiago Cerda was also 20th in the event with his mark of 14.24m (46-8.75).Â
- Britton competed in the women's shot put elite, taking 12th overall with a throw of 14.18m (46-6.25).Â
- Rice was the lone Matador in the women's 100m, charting a time of 12.13 to finish 17th.Â
- Savannah Ganter took 18th place in the women's 5000m, posting a PR of 18:18.06.
- Anna Negulic was 21st in the women's long jump with her top leap going for 5.03m (16-6).Â
- In the women's 800m, Ami Jacobson led Matador runners with a 30th-place finish of 2:19.81.Â
- Jacobson also was 32nd in the 1500m race with a time of 4:48.30.Â
