Former Matador Ryan Mason returned to the CSUN bench as an assistant under first-year head coach Theo Edwards in 2023.
Mason began his collegiate coaching career with the CSUN men in 2018, joining Jeff Campbell's staff as second assistant working alongside Edwards. He helped guide the Matadors to a 16-11 record in 2018 while earning their first Big West Tournament win, knocking off UC Santa Barbara in five sets.
As a CSUN student-athlete, Mason was a part of the CSUN men's volleyball program as a setter from 2010-15. He redshirted his freshman season in 2012 before appearing in four matches and six sets in 2013, primarily as a serving specialist, and recorded a pair of digs. Mason had one dig against BYU and one at UC Irvine as the Matadors finished 11-13 overall and 9-13 in the MPSF in 2013.Â
Mason got his first taste of coaching at the club level, serving as head coach of the Supernova All-Stars Volleyball Club where he worked with the girls 15's and 18's squads, leading his team to a 15-1 record in 2014-15 before a 16-1 mark in 2017-18. He also served as a trainer at the VIBE Volleyball Lab in El Segundo, Calif., from 2017-18. In 2013-14, Mason was the boys varsity coach at Hart High School in Valencia. Â
He transitioned to the women's collegiate indoor game in the fall of 2019 when he spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Clemson. As a member of the Tigers volleyball staff, Mason helped lead Clemson to a 19-15 record, including a pair of playoff wins in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. He was the lead coach for defensive scout video sessions and was the positional lead coach for middle blockers and opposite hitters, while also assisting with offensive tempo and schemes.
Mason then moved on to Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC where he completed a four-year stint as a member of Greg Goral’s staff in 2022. After being hired in the spring of 2019, he was promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2022 season.Â
Â
During his time at Campbell, Mason has helped the Camels to their first Big South Conference regular season title in 2022, reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2021 after winning their first Big South Championship, reach the Big South Championship game in 2019, and to a second-place regular season finish in the shortened 2020 season.
In 2022, Mason helped guide the Camels to a 19-11 record, going 14-2 in league play in route to the program’s first regular season conference championship. The Campbell attack was led by middle blocker Melody Paige, who led the Camels in both kills and blocks. Paige posted 162 blocks on the year, good for third in the nation and 59 more than anybody else in the Big South, to earn a spot on first-team all-conference.
The setters in 2022, another primary area of coaching for Mason, led the Big South with 12.21 assists/set. Emily Mitter and McKenna Sciacca spent most of the year as the 6-2 setters, with Mitter leading the team with 5.71 assists/set.Â
Â
Mason helped the Camels to a program-record 14 conference wins during the 2021 season and 21 total wins, the third-most in a single season in program history. Campbell won its first Big South Tournament championship on its home court, knocking off High Point in five sets to punch the program’s first ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The Camels faced No. 10 Nebraska in front of a crowd of 7,884, the largest ever for a Campbell match.
A native of Torrance, Calif., Mason earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from CSUN in 2015 and received a master’s of coaching and athletic administration from Concordia-Irvine in 2019.
