Gina Umeck opens her eighth season at the helm of the CSUN women's golf program in 2020-21. During the abbreviated 2019-20 season, the Matador women posted a pair of top-10 finishes which included a seventh-place showing at South Dakota State's Jackrabbit Invitational in March.
Individually, sophomore Kiran Sangha led CSUN in scoring at 76.8, finishing just ahead of senior Brianna Steger (78.3). As a team, the Matadors posted a scoring average of 314.0 over five tournaments.
CSUN had an impressive 2018-19 season, finishing second at the Big West Championship as Steger finished as runner-up and Sangha tied for third. Sangha led CSUN with a 76.2 season scoring average which ranks sixth in program history. Senior Kayla Yn, who ranked second to Sangha with a season average of 76.6, concluded her CSUN career with a 77.50 scoring average which is sixth-best in school history. Fellow senior Alice Duan ranked seventh in school history with a 77.78 career scoring average after finishing at 77.6 in 2018-19.
The Matador women enjoyed a resurgence in Umeck's first season (2013-14) as CSUN finished an impressive second at the Big West Championship and senior Clariss Guce advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Guce, who wound up as the runner-up at the conference championship, was a first-team All-Big West selection as was redshirt freshman Cesilie Hagen who took third at the Big West Championship.
CSUN announced Umeck's hiring on Aug. 27, 2013. She became the fourth head coach in Matador women's golf history.
The Redlands, Calif. native played collegiately at UCLA, where her Bruin team won the NCAA Championship in 2004. She went on to play professionally for five years on the LPGA Symetra Tour and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Women's Open at Interlochen C.C. in Edina, Minn.
Umeck began her coaching career as an instructor at Stanford University's annual summer camp. She was a recurring staff member at Aroma Golf Academy in Los Angeles, where she offered instruction in Korean and English to junior and amateur players and held a similar position at Wilshire Country Club.
While at the University of Albany, Umeck began with a squad of four players but recruited five new domestic and international players for the fall of 2013. Her recruiting class included a national top NJCAA player in Victoria Choi.
Prior to Albany, Umeck spent two seasons (2010-11, 2011-12) as the head coach at Barry University in Miami, Fla. She led Barry to the 2012 NCAA Division II national championships where the Buccaneers finished fourth. It was the schools first appearance in the national championships since 2002.
Umeck earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish from UCLA in 2005 and also has a minor in Korean language.
