Sher and Cheung Win Singles, but CSUN Falls 5-2 to UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (6-5, 2-2 Big West Conference) lost 5-2 to UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon in a Big West Conference Match. Jennifer Sher and Lorraine Cheung won singles matches, but the Matadors lost the doubles point and three singles matches in straight sets in a rematch with the Gauchos.
Having defeated UCSB during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Miami, Fla., Northridge hoped to rekindle that performance on a trip up the California coast. Unfortunately, the Matadors nearly rallied for the doubles point but fell at the very end.
CSUN Head Coach Gary Victor switched his No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams to and got a win and a loss. Lorraine Cheung and Maria Pistalu won 8-3 in the second draw, but Nigora Sirojiddinova and Anna Yang lost 8-3 in the third contest.
In the decisive match, the Matador tandem of Sher and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing rallied from down 7-2 to even the No. 1 match at 7-7. However, the Gauchos took the next two games to win the match and take the doubles point.Â
In singles, Sher posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Natalia Lozano in the No. 1 contest to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in league matches during the 2012 campaign.Â
Cheung was the other Matador to win Sunday, winning 6-2 and 6-4 over Jordan Dockendorf in the No. 6 draw. Cheung, a sophomore, improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in Big West play in singles play.Â
In the other matches, Sirojiddinova, Yang and Pistalu all fell in straight sets as UCSB took the league victory. Man-Son-Hing won the first set of her third draw, but lost in a third set tiebreaker.Â
CSUN has four matches in the week ahead. On Mar. 16, the Matadors take on Portland at noon. The next day, CSUN faces Dartmouth at 1 p.m., and then faces both CSU Bakersfield and Boudoin College on Mar. 18 starting at 11 a.m. All contests will be played at the Matador Tennis Complex. Â
