IRVINE, Calif. ---
The CSUN women's soccer team (7-10-1, 4-3-0 Big West) lost 4-3 in double overtime Sunday afternoon to UC Irvine in a Big West Conference contest at Anteater Stadium. Taylor Hobson, Kiley Norkus and Camille Watson all scored their first goals of the season, but Tatyanna Garrett scored with less than two minutes to play to give the Anteaters all three points in the league standings.
Despite the loss, the Matadors control their own destiny for a berth in the Big West Tournament. CSUN can finish with 15 points if it defeats Hawai'i on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. Including today's win, UC Irvine can finish with no more than 13 points. UC Riverside can also finish with 13 points. Cal State Fullerton has 11 points, but three matches left to play.
Things looked headed for a 3-3 draw until the final two minutes. UCI, needing to win out to have a shot at the tournament, crashed the netting on a series of crosses and Garrett scored her second goal of the day with 105 seconds remaining in the game.
CSUN rallied from down 1-0 and 2-1 to lead 3-2 with 15 minutes to play. However, UCI was able to tie things when Laura McGrail headed home a free kick for her second goal of the game.
The Matadors went ahead for the first time in the match in the 59th minute. Leandra Walker took a cross and lofted a ball back into the middle of the field. Camille Watson got underneath, spotted the goalkeeper off her line and chipped the ball into the netting for her first goal of the year.
The first half was a wild affair that saw a pair of goals 45 seconds apart. Leading 1-0 on a goal from Laura McGrail in the 11th minute, UC Irvine pulled back in the 43rd minute. A long cross was touched by McGrail in front of Jovani McCaskill. Garrett pounced on the rebound to momentarily give the Anteaters a 2-1 advantage.
However, exactly 45 seconds later, CSUN got an equalizer off the foot of Norkus. The freshman rocketed home a 35-yard blast for her first career score.
The Matadors found equal footing in the 22nd minute. A UCI foul near midfield set up a Nicole Thompson free kick. The sophomore boomed the ball into the UCI penalty area, where an Anteater got a head to it. However, the second ball fell to Hobson and, after her first shot was saved, she slammed home the rebound for her first goal of the year.
Melissa Lopez had a pair of close chances to start the second half and Norkus had several attempts at a second goal thwarted. UCI's Jennifer Randazzo finished with seven saves in the win.
McCaskill made several big stops to keep CSUN in the match. She pushed one header off the crossbar and produced several diving stops to her left. She finished with six saves and the Matador team was also credited with two team saves.
UCI finished with 20 shots to 13 for the Matadors. The teams combined for 21 fouls but there were no bookings. CSUN was without head coach Keith West, who received a red card at Long Beach State Thursday.
CSUN closes out its season Sunday, Nov. 2 vs. Hawai'i at 2 p.m. The match will be centered around Senior Day festivities where the Matadors will honor its four seniors competing in their final match at Matador Soccer Field: Brittanie Sakajian, Lopez, Walker and Wissler.
