Matadors Remain 14th at Conclusion of Saint Mary's Invitational

SEASIDE, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team posted a final round 303 but was not able to move up from 14th-place following the final round of the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Bayonet & Blackhorse G.C. Senior Steven Molumby's 35th-place finish was the best by a Matador.
In team scoring, CSUN was 14th after rounds of 311 and 299 on Monday. The Matadors hoped to better their first round 299 in Tuesday's final round but wound up at 303 to remain 14th. San Diego (864) took team-low honors by a single shot over Saint Mary's (865) in the 16-team field.
Molumby, who was a CSUN-best 33rd after two rounds (76-72) Monday, finished with a four-over 76 on Tuesday to slip into a tie for 35th at eight-over 224. Fellow senior Dodge Ward was a shot behind Molumby at nine-over 225 which tied for 38th. After an opening-round 77, Ward posted back-to-back rounds of two-over 74.
The rest of the CSUN squad was outside the top-70 as junior Tim Snyder tied for 70th at 17-over 233 while freshman Joey Varnam and senior Michael O'Connor tied for 80th at 20-over 236. Snyder, who was CSUN's low scorer in its opening tournament, finished with scores of 78-79-76 while Varnam posted rounds of 80-75-81 and O'Connor came in at 81-78-77.
Sophomore Sam Engel made his season debut competing as an individual and wound up tied for 86th at 24-over 240 following rounds of 75-81-84.
CSUN will next play in the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State Sept. 29-30 at Sunnyside Country Club.
