CSUN Rebounds With 2-0 Win Over No. 18 UAB
9/5/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The match started off cautiously with each team trying to figure out the other. After a sequence during which UAB was whistled for a foul, the Matadors struck for the first goal of the match. Robinson launched a throw-in that eventually found Lev-Ari six yards from goal in the 13th minute. The senior then slotted his shot home to pick up his 34th career goal, moving him into fifth place on the all-time Big West Conference scoring list.
Thirteen minutes later, CSUN doubled its lead thanks to more fine work by Robinson. Juan Samayoa stepped up for a corner kick and found Robinson, whose shot beat the goalkeeper into the back of the net.
The Matadors were locked in defensively in the match, not allowing the Blazers to register a shot on goal until the 62nd minute. At the half, CSUN led in shots 3-2 with all three going on goal.
The Blazers jumped quickly in the second half trying to find the rythym to get back into the match. UAB won three corner kicks in the span of three minutes but was unable to convert.
In the 75th minute, the Blazers had their best opportunity to score after being awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Alex Clay was denied by CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs on the ensuing attempt, however, as the Matadors kept their clean sheet intact.
Hobbs made another save in the 78th minute at the end of a flurry for the Blazers to keep UAB at bay. The junior finished with three saves in the match to pick up his first shutout of the year.
The Matadors will continue play on Sunday, Sept. 7, with a chance to win at least a share of the Hurricane Classic crown. CSUN will meet host Tulsa at Hurricane Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PT.
