CSUN Tops Tulsa in OT 2-1
9/7/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
CSUN started off quickly in the match, getting the first shot from Edwin Rivas just two minutes in. Rivas paced the Matadors early, recording a pair of blistering shots that were saved by Tulsa goalkeeper Jake McGuire.
Due to the early press, the Matadors were also able to win five corner kicks in the first half of play, four of which came in the first 30 minutes. Following the fourth by Camacho, CSUN was able to strike for the first goal in the match.
After the corner kick was cleared away by the Tulsa defense, David Turcios gathered the ball near midfield. His pass then found Camacho, who dribbled in from the top of the box and fired into the lower left corner past McGuire to tally his second career goal with CSUN.
At halftime, the Matadors led in shots (6-3) and corner kicks (5-2) and forced McGuire to make four saves for Tulsa. CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs went untested in the first half but came through with three important saves in the second half for the Matadors.
Hobbs made two quick saves within two minutes to deny the Golden Hurricane of the equalizer right after the break. Camacho nearly doubled the lead for CSUN in the 70th minute with a header but his shot bounced up and over the open net.
In the match's dying minutes, Tulsa sent men forward looking for the tying goal. In the 88th minute the Golden Hurricane were successful when a nice combination from Quinn Starker and Jordan Speed led to a volley from Akeil Barrett that evened the match at 1-1. Tulsa had another shot with under a minute to play but Hobbs was there for the save to extend the match to overtime.
Just 81 seconds into the extra period the Matadors found the game-winner. Carlos Gonzalez dribbled into the left side of the box before slotting the ball back to Turcios near the left corner. Turcios then drew out McGuire and crossed to Lev-Ari, who hammered the ball home from two yards out for the victory.
Lev-Ari now has 35 career goals for the Matadors, tying Willie Sims (2003-05) and Michael Preis (1996-99) for sixth all-time at CSUN.
For their work in CSUN's two wins at the Hurricane Classic, Hobbs (Co-MVP), Lev-Ari (Co-MVP), Gabe Robinson and Shane Steffes were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Matadors will return to the San Fernando Valley to play their 2014 home opener against the University of New Mexico on Friday, Sept. 12. Kickoff against the Lobos at Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
