Matadors Split Second Day of UCSB Winter Invite vs. CSUB, LMU

Kelcy Barott led CSUN with four goals and three steals as the No. 11 Matadors (1-2) earned an 11-8 win over the Bakersfield Roadrunners (0-2) on Saturday at the 2015 UCSB Winter Invite. Seven different Matadors scored in the match as the team secured its first win of the season.
CSUN picked up three goals in the first quarter after being shut out in the first frame during Friday's pair of games. At halftime, the Matadors held a 7-3 lead over the Roadrunners and tallied three more in the third quarter to keep the lead intact. Each side scored just once in the fourth quarter as CSUN held off a comeback.
Kelcie Ferreira, MacKenzy Fowler, Taitum Herrington, Amy Yule and Madeline Sanchez each had a goal in the match while McKenzie Pollei had two to her credit. Kiernan Davis made a season-high nine saves in goal.

In the day's second game, the Matadors were locked in a defensive battle before falling to the No. 16 Loyola Marymount Lions, 7-6. Marisa Young scored a pair of goals for CSUN and four others got on the board, but the Lions scored twice in the fourth quarter to escape with a victory.
For the second consecutive match the Matadors tallied three goals in the first quarter, working to a 5-4 lead at halftime. The Lions clawed back to tie the match at the end of the third quarter before scoring the decisive goals in the fourth.
Ferreira, Barott, Fowler and Katelyn Fairchild found the back of the cage for CSUN against LMU. In addition to two goals, Young recorded three steals and earned five ejections against her opponents.
The Matadors will now have a week off before playing two matches on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Cal Baptist Tournament in Riverside. CSUN will face CBU first at 9 a.m. before taking on Azusa Pacific at approximately 3:15 p.m.
