CSUN Defeats Westmont 6-1 in Season Opener

"Overall, we improved as the day went on and today was a great way to get the season started on the road," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "We are looking forward to improving each day and to be ready in two weeks when we open our Big West Conference season at UC Riverside."
The Matadors started strongly Saturday, capturing two of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The sophomore duo of Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei, who earned Second Team All-Big West Doubles honors as rookies, won their first match of the season 8-2. Last year, the duo finished 17-3 in doubles play.
In the No. 3 doubles match, CSUN earned the doubles point behind a solid performance from Jessica Warren and Criss Rodriguez. A pair of Matador upperclassmen, Warren and Rodriguez posted an 8-3 victory. Saturday marked the first time Warren and Rodriguez partnered together for an official match.
Moving to singles, the Matadors took five of the six matches with each win coming in straight sets. Hsu won the second draw 6-1, 6-1 and Kiryang Kim, making her CSUN debut, won at the No. 3 draw also by a 6-1, 6-1 margin.
Rodriguez (6-1, 6-1) and Warren (6-1, 7-5) were also victorious on the day. Rounding out the day was sophomore Mari Taslagyan, who won her No. 6 match 6-2 and 6-1.
Last season in singles play, Vivian Lin and Hsu earned All-Big West honors.
The Matadors are off for two weeks now, getting ready for the start of league play. CSUN opens the Big West season on Saturday, Feb. 14, at UC Riverside with first serve slated for 11 a.m.
