CSUN Sweeps UC Riverside in Big West Opener

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (2-0, 1-0 Big West) defeated UC Riverside 7-0 Saturday in its 2015 Big West Conference opener. The Matadors swept the Highlanders in convincing fashion Saturday, winning all nine matches without losing a single set.
In doubles play, CSUN's top tandem of Vivian Lin and Kiryang Kim trailed 1-3 early before winning 8-4. Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei took an 8-1 victory in the second draw while Criss Rodriguez and Jessica Warren posted an 8-3 win.
"We shook off some early nerves to look like the team we were in the fall. I thought Vivian and Ki did a good job of overcoming a slow start and both our second and third doubles teams jumped out to big leads and played well," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said.
Singles saw Lin cruise in the top draw and drop only four games in a straight-set victory. Hsu was pushed by UCR's Courtney Pattagulan to a 7-5 decision in the first set before rallying to sweep the second set 6-0. In the third singles match, Rodriguez also lost just four games in a straight-set decision.
Kim, Warren and Poei all won in straight sets in the fourth-sixth draw, respectively. Both Warren and Poei did not drop a game in the decisive second set.
"This was a good way to go into our toughest match-up to this point, Sunday's meeting with UC Davis," Victor added. "I like the confident look of our team. We are looking forward to every challenge."
The Matadors and Aggies will meet Sunday at the Matador Tennis Complex in a Big West Conference match. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
