Cal Poly Edges CSUN in Big West Opener
10/1/2015 9:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Matadors Host UCSB 10/3 at 5 p.m.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (4-4-1, 0-1-0 BWC) lost 1-0 to Cal Poly Thursday night at Matador Soccer Field in both teams' 2015 Big West Conference opener. In a defensive-minded battle, the only thing separating the clubs was a Chase Minter goal for the Mustangs in the 12th minute of action.
Things looked promising off the bat for CSUN in its first home match since Sept. 13. Jeremy Degraffenreidt and Steven Manios combined in the opening minute for a dangerous chance and Manios then blasted a shot off the post in the fifth minute of action.
However, in its first real attack of the game, Cal Poly mustered the game's only goal on a bicycle kick from Minter. George Grote and Noah Chapleski combined to switch the ball and flick it back into the middle of the field. With a defender draped on his back, Minter executed the shot and beat CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs.
CSUN kept pressing for the equalizer throughout the first half but to no avail. The Matadors finished with five of their seven shots in the first 45 minutes and Carlos Gonzalez had a dangerous free kick in the 31st minute that forced a diving save from Cal Poly's Wade Hamilton.
In the second half, CSUN continued to search for the equalizer. Off a free kick, Patrick Hickman had a chance thwarted at the near post in the 61st minute in CSUN's best chance of the frame. However, the Matadors had just two shots in the second half and the teams combined for just five shots over the final 45 minutes. Cal Poly's five shots for the game were the fewest by a CSUN opponent this season.
The loss snaps CSUN's three-game winning streak and Minter's goal was just the second CSUN has surrendered in the run of play over its last 502 minutes of action. Hobbs finished with one save while Hamilton had the two in the victory.
Both sides finished with nine fouls apiece and Hickman and Juan Fernando Samayoa both saw the yellow card for CSUN.
CSUN will look to rebound Saturday, Oct. 3 with a 5 p.m. match against UC Santa Barbara.
