Dean Wright Scores Second Goal of 2015 for Matadors
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-2-0 BWC) lost 2-1 in overtime to UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Dean Wright scored his second goal of the year in the 44th minute to tie the match at 1-1, but UCSB's Nick DePuy found the netting off a rebound to give the Gauchos the win in the extra period.
Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, CSUN got off to a quick start in the overtime period and won three corner kicks. Unfortunately, the Matadors could not capitalize on the set piece. That set up a hectic sequence where the CSUN team was credited with a save before DePuy ended the match in the 98th minute.
CSUN got to overtime largely due to the work of goalkeeper Adam Hobbs. The senior stopped a season-high 10 shots, several of which came from near point blank range. He had nine saves in the second half alone.
After a fairly timid start to the match, UCSB broke through in the 38th minute when DePuy headed home a cross from Andy Perez.
Less than six minutes later, Wright answered for the Matadors to tie the match. Jeremy Degraffenreidt passed to Bradley Mulvey, who sent a through ball past the UCSB defense and onto the foot of a streaking Wright. He then punched a shot past the UCSB goalkeeper for his second goal of the season. For both Degraffenreidt and Mulvey, the assist was the first of their CSUN careers.
In the second half, UCSB fired off 13 of its 18 shots for the game but could not solve Hobbs or the CSUN defense. Hobbs had a big stop on Ahinga Selemani in the 58th minute and then had a pair of point blank saves on DePuy in the 87th minute.
After finishing with four shots in the first half, CSUN mustered just one shot after halftime and finished with five for the match. UCSB's Sam Strong was the only player cautioned and the teams combined for 22 fouls.
Saturday marked CSUN's third overtime match of 2015 with all three contests coming at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN is 0-2-1 in those three contests.
The Matadors hit the road next week for a pair of Big West matches. On Thursday, Oct. 8, CSUN faces UC Davis. Two days later, Saturday, Oct. 10, the Matadors square off with Sacramento State. Both matches are set for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
