David Turcios Scores Second-Half Brace for CSUN
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Senior David Turcios scored a pair of second-half goals to help lift the visiting CSUN men's soccer team (5-5-2, 1-2-1 Big West) to a 2-1 victory at Sacramento State Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference match-up. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Turcios scored in the 46th and 63rd minutes while Dean Wright, Nicolas Camacho and Jeremy Degraffenreidt all had assists as the Matadors defeated the Hornets.Â
"We looked a little sluggish early and they capitalized. However, we kept pushing and their goalkeeper made some big saves in the first half," Davila said. "David scored a great goal right after halftime and the second was the result of another solid team effort. We deserved to win and showed great character in coming back on the road."
CSUN found itself behind just 78 seconds into Saturday's contest, its final meeting with the Big West North Division until the postseason. Brad Bumgarner scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Cesar Mendoza in the second minute to stake the home side to the early advantage.Â
The Matadors fought back over the first half but could not find an equalizer. Jumoke Hutton had a shot saved by the Hornet defense in the 19th minute and Carlos Gonzalez had a shot saved in the 23rd minute. Following a corner kick from Bradley Mulvey at the end of the 28th minute, Steven Manios hit the post with his attempt.Â
That momentum spilled over immediately into the second half when Turcios leveled the contest 41 seconds into the frame. Degraffenreidt and Camacho picked up assists on the goal, Turcios' second of the season and fourth of his career. Degraffenreidt now has had a point in three-straight matches for the Matadors.Â
"It is good to get a win, especially on the road. The first goal started up the right side and was the result of some intricate passing," Turcios said. "On the second goal, Dean got a pass out wide right, cut back in towards the box and I swung it in off the post. We've hit the post so many times, I wasn't sure it went in and looked around for where it landed."Â
CSUN kept up the pressure and Wright connected with Turcios at the start of the 63rd minute to give the Matadors the lead for good. Turcios now has seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) on the season, the second-most on the Matadors. Wright now has a team-leading three assists in 2015.Â
In goal, Adam Hobbs finished with five saves to post the victory. He made three stops in the second half to record his 26th career victory. Hobbs now has 56 saves and an .800 save percentage on the season to go with a 1.13 goals-against-average.Â
Patrick Hickman, Turcios and the CSUN bench all saw the yellow card over the 90 minutes of action. CSUN took all five of its corner kicks in the first half and neither side was whistled for offsides. Sacramento State held a narrow 16-14 advantage in shots for the contest.Â
CSUN now stands at four points in the Big West Conference, three more than it had at this point in the 2014 season. The Matadors will now close out the regular season with home-and-home match-ups with their Big West South Division Rivals.
First up is a meeting with Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Matador Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CSUN will then travel to face UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 17 in another 7 p.m. fixture.
Editor's Note: Assistts were later changed to both CSUN goals. On Turcios' first goal, Wright and Camacho were credited with assists. On the second goal, Shane Steffes was credited with an assist in addition to Wright.Â
