NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (5-6-2, 1-3-1 Big West) lost 1-0 to Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night in a Big West South Division match at Matador Soccer Field. A goal in the 45th minute with 32 seconds left before halftime off the foot of the Titans' Nigel Patterson was all that separated the two squads as both opened conference divisional play.Â
Wednesday was another defensive stalemate that was decided along the narrowest of margins. The teams combined for just 15 shots over the course of 90 minutes with only five combined attempts after halftime.Â
With the match scoreless in the final minute of the first half, the Titans got their goal off a hectic sequence inside the Matadors' 18-yard box. The ball bounced around the box from the left side to the right until it found the foot of Patterson, who slotted a shot past a diving Adam Hobbs for his second goal of the season. Ross McPhie picked up an assist on the play.Â
CSUN finished with two shots on goal and six overall Wednesday night. Jules Cailliau jumped on a turnover deep inside Cal State Fullerton, but his shot was saved at the near post. Carlos Gonzalez had the other shot on frame for CSUN, heading a low shot that forced a diving save from David Elias.Â
Hobbs made one save in the contest, catching a dangerous free kick in the first half. Both teams finished with five corner kicks in the match, CSUN getting three of those set pieces after halftime.Â
The Matadors were whistled for 14 fouls in the contest, 12 infractions coming in the first half. Steven Manios saw the yellow card in the 34th minute.Â
CSUN returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 with a road match at UC Riverside. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
