CSUN Women's Soccer (9-5-1, 2-0-1 Big West) returns to the road for a Sunday evening matchup against Hawai'i (3-10-1, 0-4 Big West) at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium with a start time of 8:00 p.m. PT. Live stats will be available for the contest.
The Matadors are coming off a pair of victories at home last weekend to stay unbeaten in Big West play and move into second place in the conference standings.
CSUN scored twice in the second half to hand UC Irvine a 2-0 defeat last Thursday and on Sunday, the Matadors held on to a 2-1 win after scoring both of their goals in the first 15 minutes of play to build an early advantage.
Sophomore Cynthia Sanchez had a weekend to remember in the two wins. The forward recorded her third brace of the season against UCI, scoring a pair after halftime to help propel CSUN to victory. With the two scores, Sanchez broke the school's all-time single-season goal record, becoming the first Matador to tally double-digit goals in a season.
In Sunday's contest, Sanchez added to her goal record with a score in the 14th minute, giving her 11 goals in 2015. A minute later, Sanchez and Lyndsey Preston assisted Kourtney Kutscher on CSUN's second goal of the afternoon.
Adding to her single-season goal record, Sanchez has moved into a first place tie with Brianna Monka (2005) for the most points in a season with 25. For her career, Sanchez's 14 goals are sixth all-time in Matadors history and she is a goal shy of moving into the top five.
Sanchez is second in the conference in goals and points on the year. In the country, she is tied for 11th in goals and 17th in points recorded.
The Matador defense also continued their stellar play in the two victories. After holding UC Davis scoreless in 110 minutes in their conference opener on Oct. 4, CSUN posted its sixth shutout of the season in the 2-0 win over UC Irvine. Facing Cal Poly, the Matadors surrendered a score in the 31st minute but didn't allow any goals the rest of the way. CSUN also did not surrender a shot attempt to Cal Poly over the final 15 minutes of the match.
CSUN is 7-3-1 all-time against Hawai'i and has only lost once in the last six meetings. Last season, the teams played to a scoreless draw in the regular season finale. In matches played at Hawai'i, the Matadors are 2-2 all-time.
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
The Rainbow Wahine are 0-4 in Big West play and have dropped six of the last seven matches overall. Last weekend, Hawai'i was defeated 2-1 at UC Riverside on Friday and 4-0 at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. At Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium this season, Hawai'i is 3-4-1 and holds a 0-2 record against Big West competition.
Dani Crawford leads the Rainbow Wahine in goals (3) and points (6) this season. The tandem of Tiana Fujimoto and Lidia Battaglia has recorded two goals apiece on the year with Fujimoto owning an assist. Storm Kenui leads the team with three assists, 43 shots attempts and 21 shots on goal.
Monk Berger has spent the most time in net with over 1,050 minutes played. Berger has saved 43, posted two shutouts and possesses a 2.23 goals-against-average.
