NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's volleyball wrapped up a tough four-match road trip Saturday with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 loss at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid.
The Matadors (4-14, 3-3 Big West) finished the road swing at 1-3 but return home Friday (Oct. 23) to open a stretch where CSUN plays six of its next nine matches inside The Matadome.
Senior Cieana Stinson tied for match-high honors with 18 kills to pace the Matadors. The outside hitter from Woodland Hills connected for a .395 hitting clip on a match-high 43 swings while also adding three digs and one solo block. Freshman Aeryn Owens added five kills (.048) while Julie Haake (.300) and Nada Dragovic (.000) chipped in four kills apiece. Setter Maddie Leiphardt posted 21 assists along with a pair of aces.
As a team, CSUN hit .188 (34-15-101) while the home standing 49ers hit .389 (51-9-108).
With the Matadors trailing by one (12-11) in the opening set, the hosts engineered a 4-0 run to boost the lead to 16-11. A Long Beach service error temporarily pulled CSUN within three at 21-18 but three points was as close as the Matadors would get the rest of the set.
With the score knotted at 4-4 in set two, the 49ers distanced themselves with a 9-3 run. Down 13-7, the Matadors rallied behind a 7-1 run to pull within 15-14 following a Long Beach service error. CSUN was within two on four occasions, the last at 21-19 when Stinson converted a Leiphardt set. But that was the final point for the Matadors as the 49ers tallied the final four points to take set two 25-19.
Down two at 10-8 in the final set, CSUN surrendered eight of the next 11 points and the 49ers opened up a 18-11 advantage. Dragovic recorded CSUN's final point of the night as her kill kept the Matadors within striking distance at 21-16 before the 49ers pulled away 25-16.
Nele Barber matched Stinson with 18 kills (.400) as Long Beach State improved to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
CSUN returns home to open up a two-match homestand Friday as the Matadors host Cal Poly at 7 p.m. The Matadors then host UC Santa Barbara Saturday with first serve at 7 p.m.
