NORTHRIDGE, CA - Sophomore Joey Varnam fired an opening round two over-par 73 Thursday and is tied for sixth place at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at Stockton Country Club.
Varnam and the Matadors are both tied for sixth after CSUN posted a team round of 19-over 303. Varnam is four shots off the pace set by UC Irvine's David Kim who finished at three-under 69. As a team, the Matadors sit tied with Cal State Fullerton, four shots out of third and just 11 shots back of team-leading Long Beach State (292).
Varnam finished the front nine at one-over with bogeys at No. 4 and No. 7 and a birdie on the par-five second hole. It was the same story on the back nine as he had a birdie and a pair of bogeys to go with six pars.
"I'm pleased with our comeback, we didn't blow ourselves out of it which is good considering how we played at our last tournament," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "It's not supposed to be as windy tomorrow so hopefully we can gain some ground. Today we played more like we're capable of playing."
Senior Tim Snyder matched Varnam with a pair of birdies but had one additional bogey and is tied for 15th after a three-over 74. Snyder finished one-over on the front nine but was two-over on the back nine after a bogey five at No. 18.
Aaron Grimes and Felix Mory are tied for 49th at seven-over 78 after one round. Grimes, who rallied on the back nine, was six-over on his front nine which included a triple bogey seven on the par-four fourth hole. Mory also struggled on the front nine where he was five-over but the junior was just two-over on the back nine to match Grimes' 78.
Sam Engel rounded out the CSUN scoring as he is tied for 80th at 11-over 82. Luis Calderon is also competing as an individual and is currently tied for 71st at nine-over 80.
The second round gets underway Tuesday as the Matadors will tee off from the first hole starting at 8:30 a.m.
