NORTHRIDGE, CA - On a day when the weather cooperated, the CSUN men's golf team posted a seven stroke improvement but slipped from sixth to 12th after two rounds of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Friday at Stockton Country Club.
After a windy opening round on Thursday, every team was able to post an improvement Friday as CSUN scored a round of 296 but was passed by five teams on the leaderboard.
"I'm disappointed with the way we played today but tomorrow is another day," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Every player on this team is capable of shooting under par but we've got to start eliminating some of the mistakes to make that happen. We've got to be better when the flag is up."
Sophomore Joey Varnam continues to lead the Matadors despite dropping from sixth to 24th following a second round three-over 74. Varnam heads into the final round at five-over 147, eight shots off the lead.
Junior Aaron Grimes fired a two-over 73 on Friday to move up into a tie for 44th at nine-over 151. Senior Tim Snyder also shares 44th place after struggling to a second round 77. Junior Sam Engel, who opened with an 82, posted CSUN's low round of the day posting a one-over 72 to move into a tie for 69th at 12-over 154. Felix Mory rounded out the Matador scoring as he carded a final round 80 to drop into a tie for 79th at 16-over 158. Luis Calderon, competing individually, is tied for 81st at 17-over 159 after a second round 79.
CSUN will tee off the final round Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. from the 10th hole.
