Matadors Drop Five-Setter at UC Davis

NORTHRIDGE, CA - After pulling off its first five-set win of the season Saturday against UC Santa Barbara, the CSUN Matadors came out on the short end Thursday night as host UC Davis pulled out a 25-20, 26-28, 25-16, 15-25, 15-8 victory at The Pavilion.
Freshman Aeryn Owens and senior Cieana Stinson each put down a match-high 21 kills for CSUN which dropped to 5-16 overall and 4-5 in the Big West. For Owens it marked a season high in kills as the outside hitter hit .432 on 44 swings to go with three digs. Stinson came within one kill of her season high as the senior  hit .233 on a career-high 60 attacks.
Sophomore middle Rachel Diaz also had a solid match with a career-high 11 kills and one error on a career-high 16 swings to hit a match-high .625. Stephanie Serna Arreola and Nada Dragovic each chipped in five kills as CSUN hit .305 (65-15-164). Junior setter Maddie Leiphardt handed out a Matador season-high 55 assists as CSUN lost for the first time this season when hitting .300 or better.
The Aggies finished just behind hitting .298 (70-20-168) as the hosts helped themselves with 13 aces to CSUN's five.
Both teams came out hitting well as the Matadors dropped the opening frame despite hitting .382. The Aggies hit a shade better (.385) and broke open a 17-17 tie by outscoring CSUN 8-3 down the stretch. After not committing a single error in the set, the Matadors committed back-to-back errors in a decisive Aggie run.
In the second set, an early 6-2 lead for CSUN swelled to as many as six (11-5) following a solo block by Owens. An 8-2 Aggie run erased the Matador lead but CSUN managed to stay in front until Kaylin Squyres' kill gave UC Davis its first lead of the set 21-20. The Aggies pushed the lead to 23-20 before the Matadors answered with a 4-1 run to send the set to extra points. With the score still tied at 26-25, Kristey Markle subbed in and served back-to-back aces giving CSUN the 28-26 victory.
The Aggies hit .481 in winning the third set 25-16 and the Matadors answered by hitting .500 to dominate the fourth. Unfortunately for CSUN, the hitting didn't carry over to the decisive fifth set as Davis hit .471 to the Matadors' .100. With the score tied 5-5, Diaz's lone hitting error was followed by a pair of Squyres' aces and the Aggies went up 8-5. A kill from Julie Haake kept the Matadors within three at 9-6 but CSUN would get no closer, falling 15-8.
Squyres led a quartet of UC Davis (11-13, 6-4 Big West) hitters in double figures with 15 kills to go with eight aces.
CSUN returns to the southland tomorrow in advance of a Saturday matchup at UC Irvine.
