Consistency Eludes Matadors in 14th Place Finish

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team continued to find consistency an elusive commodity as the Matadors finished 14th Saturday at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at Stockton Country Club.
CSUN was sixth after an opening round 303 but slipped down the leaderboard in each of the next two rounds culminating with a 14th-place finish after a final round 307. The Matadors posted a team total of 906 over three rounds. Sacramento State won the team championship with a score of 859.
"Again today, it came down to inconsistency and execution," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We're making poor decisions and turning bogeys into double bogeys and so on. We played our last hole seven over-par so that didn't help our cause."
Junior Aaron Grimes wound up as the Matadors' low scorer as he finished at four-over 75 for the day and 13-over 226 for the tournament which was tied for 48th. Tim Snyder finished Saturday with his second straight round of 77 to finish tied for 62nd at 15-over 228. Joey Varnam, who led the Matadors over the first two rounds, struggled to a final round 11-over 82 and finished a shot behind Snyder at 16-over 229.Â
Junior Sam Engel posted a final round 78 to finish 70th at 19-over 232. Junior Felix Mory was the only CSUN player to move up after the final round as he posted a final round six-over 77 to move up three spots to 76th. Luis Calderon, competing individually, also tied for 76th at 22-over 235 following rounds of 80-79-76.
"We've got one more tournament this fall so we just need to end the fall on a positive note and take some momentum into the spring," added Bracken.
