NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team fired a season-low round of 285 and is tied for fifth after the opening round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic Friday at Ka'anapali Golf Course in Lahaina, Hawai'i.
The Matadors overcame a slow start to put three players in the top 25 at even-par 71. As a team, CSUN posted a team score of 285 which is two shots better than its previous season-low of 287.
"We approached this tournament a little differently and decided that we're going to play a lot more conservatively," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "That means playing to the fat part of the greens, making pars, avoiding mistakes and that's exactly what we did today."
A trio of Matadors, Sam Engel, Felix Mory and Tim Snyder, are currently tied for 25th at even-par 71 through 18 holes. Engel and Snyder each had four birdies for CSUN while Mory played relatively error-free golf with one birdie and one bogey to go with 16 pars.
Junior Aaron Grimes also had four birdies but had one additional bogey and is tied for 32nd at one-over 72. Sophomore Joey Varnam overcame a rough start to wind up at four-over 75 which leaves him in a tie for 62nd after one round.
The Matadors, looking for their best finish in four fall tournaments, are tied with Georgia and Liberty nine shots off the pace set by round one leader Oklahoma (276). Six teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 40 are competing in a field consisting of 19 schools.
"We played solid and the guys are confident we can replicate today's performance over the next two rounds," added Bracken.
The Matadors will tee off the second round Saturday morning at 8:30 local time.
