Davis, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (7-5-1, 0-0-1 BWC) fought the UC Davis Aggies (8-3-2, 1-0-1 BWC) to a 0-0 draw in its Big West Conference opener on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field. Senior goalkeeper Cynthia Tafoya racked up a season-high six saves in the contest en route to posting her third shutout of the season.
"We did some things very well today," said head coach Keith West. "We didn't give up a goal to a great UC Davis team. I'm proud of our defense today to hold them scoreless. Anytime you can pick up a point away from home, it's always a good thing."
The Matadors played in their second-straight double overtime nail biter in as many games. After battling nationally-ranked Texas Tech to a standstill for over 104 minutes, before falling late, CSUN was in another tense battle for 110 minutes with UC Davis on Sunday.
In the match, the Aggies outshot CSUN 19-14 and held a 10-6 edge in corner kick opportunities. UC Davis also posted six shots on goal on the afternoon, but none of the attempts found the back of the net on Sunday.
CSUN posted its most shots in the match in the first half, holding a 6-5 advantage in the first 45 minutes of play. Kourtney Kutscher recorded two of her three shots in the first half including a shot on goal in the 36th minute that was stopped by Aggie goalkeeper Alexis Smith.
In the second half, the Aggies outshot the Matadors 10-5 but the CSUN defense continued to hold UC Davis at bay. Tafoya registered three of her six saves in the half including a stop in the 85th minute that kept the contest at 0-0.
The match headed into overtime and in the extra minutes each team traded chances at the goal but neither side could hit the winning score. Lyndsey Preston recorded two of the three Matador shots in the overtime periods while Kutscher fired a shot that was stopped by Smith in the 108th minute.
Tafoya posted her fifth and sixth saves of the day in the overtime sessions. With 110 minutes of scoreless play, Tafoya earned her eighth shutout of her CSUN career, placing her fifth all-time in the Matador record books. She had previously posted shutouts this season against Detroit (Sept. 6) and at Portland (Sept 13).
Preston led CSUN with four shots in the contest while Kutscher finished second on the team with three. Ariana Tran and Kiley Norkus each posted a pair of shots apiece.
The Matadors return to the field for their conference home opener against visiting UC Irvine on Thursday. Kickoff from Matador Soccer Field is slated for 7 p.m.
