LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- The CSUN softball team (6-1) defeated Portland State 11-0 (five innings) and New Mexico 3-2 at the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. In the victory over the Vikings, Katie Hooper and Maylynn Mitchell each homered as the Matadors offense posted nine hits. In the second game of the day, CSUN rallied for a 3-2 victory over New Mexico behind a superb performance from freshman Zoe Conley. The rookie tossed 4.2 innings of relief work with five strikeouts to earn her first collegiate victory.
"Against Portland State, we hit the ball well and stayed aggressive at the plate. Against New Mexico, we needed to make adjustments quicker, but the girls did a good job of pushing through and getting the win. That was a good test for us because we were playing someone for the second time and I thought we did a good job of finding different ways to succeed," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said.Â
Portland State Recap
The CSUN softball team defeated Portland State 11-0 in five innings in its first game Friday as part of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. Katie Hooper hit a grand slam and Maylynn Mitchell added a three-run home run as the Matadors captured a run-rule victory over the Vikings.
CSUN delivered several big innings offensively in improving to 10-3 in the all-time series with Portland State. Carissa Sherman singled and then scored on an RBI single from Hooper in the first inning.
Mitchell launched her first home run of the season to give CSUN a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Savannah Horvath walked to start the inning and Ariana Wassmer reached on an error to set up the three-run home run.Â
In the third, Taylor Glover singled to start the inning and then stole second and third base. Hooper then drew a walk, but Glover was tagged out at the plate on a fielder's choice from Courtney Horne.Â
Hooper was also tagged out at the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Horvath. With two outs in the frame, Ariana Wassmer delivered a double that plated both freshmen and she later scored on a fielding error to give CSUN a 4-0 advantage.
The Matadors started the fourth inning with three straight singles off the bats of Kaitlin Toerner, Sherman and Mitchell. That set up Hooper's grand slam and the sophomore had a career-high five RBIs in the game.Â
All that offense was enough for Daphne Pofek (2-0) who tossed the first three innings to earn the victory. She allowed only two hits and finished with two strikeouts. Aliyah Ricks tossed the final two innings of work for the Matadors.Â
Raya Johnson took the loss for Portland State after tossing the first two innings of work.Â
New Mexico Recap
The Matadors (6-1) defeated New Mexico for the second time in a week Friday evening behind a stellar outing from rookie Zoe Conley. Entering the game in relief in the third inning, Conley allowed only three hits and fanned five Lobos to help lead CSUN to a comeback victory.
A timely rally in the top of the fourth inning backed up Conley's efforts in the circle. With two down in the frame, Taylor Glover drew a walk. That brought Katie Hooper to the plate and the sophomore doubled and came all the way around to score and give CSUN a 3-2 lead.Â
The Lobos struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third off CSUN starter Brianna Elder. That brought Conley into the game and the rookie retired the side in order twice and got some solid defensive work behind her.Â
After the leadoff batter reached in the bottom of the seventh, the next two Lobos batters were unable to execute a sacrifice bunt as the Matadors cut down the lead runner on each attempt.Â
Hooper and Carissa Sherman combined for CSUN's first run of the game in the top of the first. Sherman singled to start the game and then moved to second on a throwing error. She then came around to score on a single from Hooper.
A sophomore from Burbank, Calif., Hooper finished the day with seven RBIs after posting five in CSUN's win over Portalnd State. Glover stole three bases on the day to give her six for the season. At 6-1, CSUN is off to its best start since the 1999 season.Â
The Matadors continue play in Las Vegas on Saturday, Feb. 14 with contests against Indiana (3:45 p.m.) and Utah (6 p.m.). CSUN closes out the tournament with a game against Utah State on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11:15 a.m.Â
