Indiana Recap
The CSUN softball team (7-1) defeated Indiana 12-5 in its first game Saturday at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Matadors pounded four home runs, three doubles and 13 hits and improved to 2-0 against the Big Ten Conference.Â
Sophomores Taylor Glover, Taylor Nate and Katie Hooper combined for the four home runs. Glover cranked a pair of home runs in a game for the second time in her career. She finished 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base.Â
Nate had a stat line full of crooked numbers. Playing in left field, Nate finished 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.Â
Hooper finished 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs, two RBIs and a walk. She also added both a sacrifice hit and a sacrifice fly and had a stolen base in the victory.Â
Freshman Savannah Horvath had a pair of doubles and junior Ariana Wassmer also had a two-base hit. Both Horvath and Wassmer each had a stolen base and junior Maylynn Mitchell had CSUN's seventh stolen base of the game.Â
Senior Kaitlin Toerner was the fourth Matador to finish with a multi-hit game after picking up a pair of singles. Sophomore Aliyah Ricks scored a pair of runs and was one of eight Matadors with a hit in the win.Â
For the second-straight game, freshman Zoe Conley (2-1) turned in a strong performance in relief to earn the win. The rookie allowed three hits, one walk and one run over the final 3.1 innings of work and fanned three Hoosiers.Â
CSUN jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three and a half innings. In the first, Mitchell and Glover reached to start the game and then moved into scoring position on a double steal. Hooper picked up an RBI sac fly to score Mitchell and Glover came in on an RBI single from Cortney Horne.Â
Nate then brought them all home with a two-run home run and CSUN led 4-0. Glover hit her first solo home run in the second and Nate had an RBI single in the frame that plated Hooper.Â
Indiana then scored the next five runs to claw back within 6-5. The Hoosiers hit a solo home run in the second off Jordan Sauceda and then scored four runs off Crystal Maas and Conley in the fourth.Â
The top of the sixth was pretty wild. Indiana committed three errors in the frame and the Matadors got RBIs from Allison Lacey, Carissa Sherman and Wassmer to take a 9-5 advantage.Â
In the top of the seventh, Glover and Hooper went back-to-back with a pair of solo home runs to start the inning. Horvath added an RBI double that scored Ricks to give CSUN its final advantage.Â
Utah Recap
The Matadors (7-2) lost an 8-0 decision to Utah in five innings in their second game of the day Saturday in Las Vegas. The Utes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and did not look back in handing CSUN its second loss of the season.Â
CSUN starter Brianna Elder (2-1) had a tough start Saturday evening. The senior recorded only one out and allowed four earned runs, three hits and a walk before being pulled in favor of Zoe Conley.
