CSUN jumped out to an early lead and played shutdown defense in the second half as the ninth-ranked Matadors (7-5) defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas (0-4) 15-7 on Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at Matador Pool. Six different Matadors scored two goals in the contest and CSUN held CMS to a single goal after halftime in the victory.
The Matadors built a four-goal lead in the first period thanks to six tallies, all from different players, following an early timeout.
"At the beginning of the game I told the team I was going to call a timeout to work on setting up a play. More importantly though, we didn't come out with the right attitude and right approach, said CSUN head coach Marty Matthies. "We have to come out with the same intensity and energy every time. I think after the first quarter we did a good job. We played some lineups of girls that had never played with each other. Ultimately we were able to accomplish what we wanted to accomplish."
Three more in the second frame put CSUN ahead 9-6 at halftime after the Athenas cut into the lead with four goals of their own.
CSUN outscored CMS 6-1 over the final 16 minutes to put the match away. Kelcie Ferreira, Kelcy Barott, Marisa Young, MacKenzy Fowler, Marissa Petras and Amy Yule each had a pair of goals on the day. Madeline Sanchez, Shannon Hovanesian and Taitum Herrington added one apiece.
