Matadors Rally For 4-3 Victory Against UC Davis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (3-0, 2-0 Big West) defeated UC Davis 4-3 Sunday afternoon in the Matadors' 2015 home opener at Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN won its second Big West Conference match in as many days as the Matadors overcame a tough setback in doubles play to win four singles matches and capture the match.
CSUN lost the doubles point in tough fashion. The teams split the top two draws and set up the third match as the decisive contest for the opening point. Despite having four set points, the Matadors' team of Jessica Warren and Criss Rodriguez lost 8-7 in the tiebreaker.
Still, the Matadors persevered and quickly responded in singles play. CSUN won the first set in five of the six singles contests to regain momentum.
Sophomore Vivian Lin won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) in the top singles draw. Mickey Hsu won 6-2 and 6-0 in the second draw. Kiryang Kim won in straight sets in the fourth match, 6-3 and 6-1, while Jessica Warren wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the fifth draw.
"I am really proud of how we performed today. We showed resiliency and strong character. We were extremely unfortunate in doubles play, but we rallied with a strong start in singles," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "It was nice to see that the team was not phased after losing the doubles' point. We are mentally tough and a very good squad. We have got a lot of dates that will test our adversity."
CSUN returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 with another Big West Conference match. CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton with first serve slated for 11 a.m.
