NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (4-0, 3-0) defeated Cal State Fullerton 4-3 Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference match at Matador Tennis Complex. The Matadors swept the doubles matches to earn the decisive point in defeating the Titans.Â
"Our doubles were outstanding today," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "Vivian and Ki carried a renewed energy through a tough win. Mickey and Kristen battled back from an early deficit and Jessica and Criss played like the team they are capable of being."Â
Kiryang Kim and Vivian Lin won 8-5 in the top doubles draw and Jessica Warren and Criss Rodriguez captured an 8-5 match in the third draw. Finally, Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei needed a 15th game, but held on 8-7 (5) to win in the second draw.Â
The early 1-0 advantage was needed as Cal State Fullerton won the top two singles matches. Poei and Rodriguez each won in straight sets for the Matadors.Â
Kim's three-set victory in the third draw proved to be the decisive point for CSUN in dispatching the Titans. A true freshman from Seoul, South Korea, Kim took out a senior in the Titans' Megan Sandford.Â
"Kiryang has grown so much in these past few weeks. She handled the pressure situation with a toughness that few freshmen have," Victor added. "That was a very tough and well coached team. We are happy to get the win."Â
