PALM DESERT, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team opened with a team round of 304 and are tied for 21st after the first of three rounds of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Friday at The Classic Club. Senior Michael O'Connor is tied for 25th individually to lead the Matadors.
Coming off its first top-five finish of the season last week at Southern Utah, CSUN struggled to a 304 in the opening round and has some work to do over the next two rounds.
"I was certainly expecting us to play better today," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "The guys were frustated with their play today but we'll regroup and hopefully gain some ground over the next two days. We're not looking behind us that's for sure."
O'Connor, coming off a third-place finish at Southern Utah, opened with an even-par 72 on Friday which places him in a tie for 25th with a host of players.
"Michael played solid today, he birdied the last two holes get back to even," said Bracken.
Steven Molumby is tied for 62nd at three-over 75, Tim Snyder is tied for 85th at five-over 77, Sam Engel is tied for 112th at eight-over 80 and Aden Louez is tied for 22nd after a 10-over 82.
Texas Tech has the first round team lead as the Red Raiders carded a seven-under 281 to lead the 24-team field by four shots. UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith is the individual leader at five-under 67 which is two shots better than four players who are tied at three-under 69.
"Although we didn't play all that well today, we did take away some positives," added Bracken. We worked on a lot of things after today's round and can move up if we play well Saturday and Sunday which the team is expecting."
CSUN will tee off Saturday's second round beginning at 7:00 a.m. The final round is scheduled for Sunday.
