PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (12-3) defeated Grand Canyon University 12-0 in five innings Sunday in its final game at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. Zoe Conley (4-1) allowed one hit to go with three strikeouts to earn her first career shutout and the CSUN offense exploded for a season-high 12 runs and 13 hits.Â
At 12-3, the Matadors are off to their best start since the 1994 team went 13-2 through its first 15 games. Both the 2004 and 1996 teams started 11-4 on the year.Â
"It was awesome to get everyone in and we took some good swings and were aggressive. We were in attack mode from the start," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "Zoe went right at hitters. She did not have any walks and that means she is doing well and working ahead in counts. She did a great job all weekend of keeping hitters off balance."Â
Taylor Glover, Maylynn Mitchell and Savannah Horvath each had two hits in the win. Glover scored two runs and recorded her 10th stolen base of the season. Mitchell scored two runs, added two RBIs and posted her second double of the year. Horvath hit her team-leading fifth double of the season, finished with two runs and two RBIs and added a sac fly.
Cortney Horne hit a three-run home run in an eight-run fifth inning, the first home run of her CSUN career. Crystal Maas added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the frame as well. Seven of the Matadors' nine batters in the starting line-up recorded a hit.Â
In the circle, Conley allowed just one hit to post her fourth win of the season. She had three strikeouts and did not walk a batter. For the season, Conley is 4-1 with a 1.33 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 31.2 innings of work.
CSUN struck for three runs in the top of the second. Horne walked and then moved to second on a wild pitch. She then scored on a Horvath double and after Ariana Wassmer reached on an error, Mitchell brought home Horvath with an RBI single. Wassmer was tagged out on the play, but Mitchell came around to score on an RBI double from Madison Fleming.Â
The Matadors tacked on a run in the third on a sac fly from Horvath that scored Glover.
In the fifth, CSUN erupted for eight runs on eight hits and left the bases loaded. Carissa Sherman started the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a single from Glover. The pair executed a double steal to move into scoring position and Taylor Nate reached on a fielder's choice to earn an RBI.Â
Horne cleared the bases with a three-run shot to give CSUN an 8-0 lead. Mitchell added an RBI double in the frame and Jordan Sauceda drew a bases-loaded walk to end the contest's scoring.Â
The Matadors open their 2015 home schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 24 with a 1 p.m. contest at Matador Diamond against St. John's. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, CSUN plays a doubleheader with Utah Valley that also begins at 1 p.m.Â
