CSUN Sweeps Singles to Defeat Eastern Michigan
2/24/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---The CSUN women's tennis team (5-0) defeated Eastern Michigan 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. Using a new scoring format from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, CSUN dropped the doubles point before rallying to take all six singles contests in the victory.
The ITA has introduced a new scoring format to NCAA Tennis that is aimed at speeding up play. First, the new format has the doubles matches playing first to six wins in the set, not eight.
Secondly, there is no advantage or "Deuce" in either singles or doubles play. That is, at 40-40, the game is decided on the seventh point.
The Big West Conference has not adopted this format for the 2015 season for conference matches, so CSUN and its non-conference opponents can decide on which format to use. This was the first time CSUN played to the new format in 2015.
"Tuesday brought a few new challenges to our team. It was our first match of the year on a school day and it was our first time using the new scoring format. Because of that, I don't think we were quite ready for doubles and we came out a little flat," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "However, I think we really hit our stride about 20 minutes into singles play and that's when we started to get rolling."
CSUN won one of the three doubles contests, with Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei winning 6-3 in the second draw.
In singles play, Vivian Lin won in straight sets in the top draw, losing only five of 17 games played. Hsu also won in straight sets, capturing the second contest while losing only six games total.
Kiryang Kim needed to go to a tiebreaker in the first set of her win, eventually taking a 7-6 (2) and 6-4 decision.
Criss Rodriguez also won in straight sets in the fifth draw and Jessica Warren also took a straight-set decision in the fifth draw. Poei wrapped up the six-match streak with a win in two sets in the sixth draw.
