
No. 9 CSUN Finishes Eighth at UC Irvine Invitational

The No. 9 CSUN Matadors were edged in a pair of matches on the second day of the UC Irvine Invitational, falling to No. 5 UC Irvine and No. 6 Arizona State. The Matadors (10-8) went 1-3 on the weekend to finish eighth at the event and will turn their attention to the team's Big West Conference opener on March 7th at Hawai'i.

The ninth-ranked CSUN women's water polo team (10-7) played a hard-fought match against the No. 5 UC Irvine Anteaters (7-5), but ultimately fell 8-3 in its third match of the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday morning.
A defensive battle in the first quarter resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Anteaters. The Matadors struck for a pair of goals in the second, but a four-goal outburst for UCI had the home side ahead 5-2 at halftime.
UC Irvine added two more in the third quarter and CSUN's lone goal in the fourth was unable to spark the necessary rally before the final whistle.
Kelcie Ferreira, Kelcy Barott and Marisa Young each scored for the Matadors, and Young added three steals and three field blocks. Ferreira and Katie Kammer picked up assists for CSUN in the contest.

The Matadors (10-8) nearly overcame the sixth-ranked Sun Devils but were denied 9-7 in the Seventh Place Match at the UCI Invitational. Ferreira had a hat trick to lead the way for CSUN and the Matadors matched Arizona State goal-for-goal after the first quarter.
The Sun Devils worked quickly in the first frame and took a 3-1 lead after eight minutes of play and had a 4-1 lead in the second. The Matadors scored twice to get within a goal before Arizona State answered to go ahead 6-3 at the break.
CSUN outscored Arizona State 4-3 in the second half, but each time the Matadors drew close the Sun Devils had a response. In addition to three goals, Ferreira had an assist and three steals.
Young had a pair of goals, two steals, two field blocks and an assist, while MacKenzy Fowler scored twice and had a field block as well.
