
Sanchez Nets Buzzer Beater as No. 8 CSUN Tops No. 6 Hawai'i 7-6

Freshman attacker Madeline Sanchez scored a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally at the buzzer, to lift the No. 8 CSUN Matadors (11-8, 1-0 Big West) past the No. 6 Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (7-5, 0-1 Big West) 7-6 on Saturday evening at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Kelcy Barott recorded a hat trick and added two assists while goalkeeper Kiernan Davis made 11 saves in the victory.
The Matadors jumped out to an early lead, claiming a 2-0 advantage after the first quarter. Despite allowing a pair of goals in the second, CSUN was able to add another goal to lead 3-2 at halftime. Both teams scored twice in each of the final two frames and Sanchez's strike before the final whistle gave the Matadors their third straight over the Rainbow Wahine, each by a one-goal margin.
In addition to notching the game-winning goal, Sanchez added an assist and a pair of steals. Bianca Adams had a goal in her first appearance of the season while Katie Kammer rounded out the scoring for CSUN with a goal of her own. Kelcie Ferreira had two assists and two steals and both Marisa Young and Taitum Herrington had one assist each.
The Matadors will take a break from Big West play and head to UC San Diego for their next match, which will take place on Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m. CSUN will then host its annual Alumnae Match on Saturday, March 21, at noon before returning to competitive play against Long Beach State on March 28th at noon at Matador Pool.
