CSUN Softball Defeats Wisconsin, Stanford at Kajikawa Classic
2/6/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (2-0) defeated Wisconsin, 4-3, and Stanford, 7-5, in its first two games of the 2015 season Friday as part of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. In the season opener, CSUN rallied for a late run in downing the Badgers and scored four runs in a big fifth inning to post their first win over the Cardinal since 2001.Â
The wins give CSUN its first 2-0 start since the 2005 season. Head coach Tairia Flowers saw the day as a product of a lot of hard work.Â
"Some things went our way today and some did not. But what did not change was our approach. We were consistent all day in what our plan was and we executed when we needed," Flowers said. "We played with confidence all day and it paid off."Â
The first game pitted CSUN against the Big Ten's Wisconsin Badgers, a participant in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. In turn, the Matadors got an outstanding 2015 debut performance from Brianna Elder.Â
A senior from Concord, Calif., Elder (1-0) tossed a complete game in the win over the Badgers, striking out 12 Wisconsin batters. She allowed no earned runs while scattering two hits and walking two in the victory.Â
At the plate, CSUN saw a freshman hit a home run in their collegiate debut for the second-straight season. In the bottom of the second, Savannah Horvath launched a home run to lead off the inning.Â
The Matadors doubled their lead in the third on an RBI single from Katie Hooper. She drove home Taylor Glover, who had walked, stole second and moved to third on an error to start the inning. CSUN drove the lead to 3-0 on an RBI single from Madison Fleming that scored Taylor Nate.Â
Wisconsin tied the game in the fifth on a two-out double that saw CSUN commit two errors on the play. That set up the dramatic finish for CSUN in the bottom of the sixth. Maylynn Mitchell singled to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a sac bunt from Kaitlin Toerner.Â
With Mitchell in scoring position, pinch hitter Madalyne Handy placed a bunt down the third-base line that was misplayed and throw into right field. Mitchell came around to score and the Matadors had their first win of the 2015 season.Â
In the afternoon contest, CSUN got a big inning to rally past the Stanford Cardinal. The Matadors now have wins against the Pac-12 Conference in three-straight years.Â
The visiting team, CSUN struck for three quick runs. Making her collegiate debut, Cortney Horne singled in the second and moved to third on a double from Ariana Wassmer. Horne then scored on a play when Mitchell reached on a throwing error from the pitcher.Â
In the third, Horne drew a bases loaded walk to score Glover from third base. Wassmer then delivered an RBI sac fly to right field to score Hooper.Â
Stanford fought back and scored four runs off Matador starter Zoe Conley, one coming in the bottom of the third and three coming in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan Sauceda (1-0) would retire the final out of the fourth with Stanford in control 4-3.Â
CSUN wasted little time regaining control of the game in the top of the fifth. Hooper started things with a walk and then moved to second as Nate reached on a fielding error. Horvath was hit by a pitch and Horne drove home the first run of the inning with an RBI sac fly to score Hooper.Â
Although Nate was tagged out trying to advance to third on Horne's sac fly, CSUN kept the momentum rolling with a Wassmer single. Mitchell then singled to score Horvath and wisely moved to second as the throw went to the plate.
With Wassmer on third and Mitchell on second, an illegal pitch scored Wassmer. Mitchell then scored on an RBI single from Carissa Sherman to conclude the Matadors' four-run fifth.Â
Stanford pushed one more run across against Sauceda, but the senior and sophomore Daphne Pofek sealed the win for CSUN. In earning the win, Sauceda allowed one hit and one run with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Pofek picked up the save by allowing just one hit over the final two innings.Â
In her collegiate debut, Conley allowed six hits and four runs, although only one of them was earned, in 3.2 innings of work. She had four strikeouts and two walks.Â
The Matadors return to action Saturday with another pair of games at the Kajikawa Classic. CSUN faces New Mexico (5 p.m.) and Fresno State (7:15 p.m) in action on Saturday, Feb. 7.Â
