
No. 11 CSUN Finishes Fourth at UCSD Triton Invitational

The No. 11 CSUN Matadors (6-5) faced a pair of Top 5 programs on the second day of the UCSD Triton Invitational, falling to No. 3 USC in the semifinal round before being defeated in the third-place match by No. 5 Arizona State. Overall the Matadors went 2-2 at the competition and finished fourth out of 16 teams in the field, the team's highest finish at the tournament since at least 2008. The finish is thought to be the best in school history, but archives from before 2008 are not immediately available.

The No. 11 CSUN Matadors (6-4) ran into a roadblock on Sunday morning, falling to No. 3 USC (5-0) 19-3 in the semifinal round of the UCSD Triton Invitational. Despite the loss, the Matadors earned a spot in the third-place match in the 16-team tournament against No. 5 Arizona State later in the day.
The Matadors had a tough time cracking the defense of the Women of Troy, who raced out to a 9-0 halftime lead. CSUN got on the board with two goals in the third quarter and another in the fourth, but USC's offensive threats proved too much to overcome.
Kelcy Barott, Marisa Young and Madeline Sanchez each scored for the Matadors, while Kelcie Ferreira had an assist on each of the team's three goals.

The Matadors followed the morning game with one against No. 5 Arizona State (9-1) but were unable to get past the Sun Devils and fell 12-7. CSUN was able to outlast 12 other teams in the competition and took home fourth place on the weekend.
The teams were tied 1-1 going into the second quarter, but Arizona State put up five to take a 6-3 lead at halftime. Both sides scored twice in the third quarter and the Sun Devils held off CSUN's comeback bid in the fourth.
Kelcy Barott and Marisa Young each had a hat trick for the Matadors and were joined by Katie Kammer on the scoresheet. Young also earned four ejections during the match while goalkeeper Kiernan Davis had a season-high 16 saves against the Sun Devils.
