CSUN hosts a five-team tournament this weekend at Matador Diamond, welcoming the Bryant Bulldogs, the Iona Gaels, the Buffalo Bison and the Colorado State Rams to the San Fernando Valley. The event features four games on Friday, Mar. 13, four more on Saturday, Mar. 14 and three on Sunday, Mar. 15.
Glover finished 2-for-2 and stole her 19th base of the season to go with a run scored. The steal is the 38th of her career, the most in CSUN's Division I history, passing former Matadors Jennifer Mosier and Jaci Carlsen who each had 37. She needs just one more steal this season to break a school record she co-owns with Carlsen for a single season.
Hooper added RBIs 30 and 31 on the season with a two-run single in the bottom of the third and raised her batting average to a team-high .425 in 25 games. Toerner raised her season average to .320 with a pair of singles.
The Matadors and Bulldogs kicked off the event Thursday with a 3 p.m. contest and it was the visitors who struck first. Bulldog pitcher Elle Madsen tagged her counterpart Jordan Sauceda with a two-run home run in the top of the first.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, CSUN took the lead with three runs. Toerner singled to start the inning and with one out, Glover singled and moved to second as Toerner pulled into third. Hooper singled up the middle to score them both and she came all the way around from second on a passed ball to score the third run of the inning.
Bryant tied the game with a rally in the fourth, getting a base hit off CSUN reliever Zoe Conley (9-3). That would be the only hit she would surrender in 3.1 innings of work to earn her ninth of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, CSUN struck for two runs to take the victory. Savannah Horvath singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ariana Wassmer. She then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tara Kliebenstein. With two outs, Maylynn Mitchell blasted her third home run of the season to give the Matadors an insurance run.
CSUN returns to action as part of the tournament against Buffalo at 4 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 13 at Matador Diamond.
