CSUN Defeats UCONN, Pacific to Start Louisville Slugger Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (23-8) defeated UCONN 7-1 and Pacific 4-0 Friday afternoon in a pair of non-conference games as part of the Louisville Slugger Invitational on the campus of the University of the Pacific. Power pitching paced CSUN all day as Brianna Elder and Zoe Conley combined to allow one run and six hits in 14 innings of softball.
UCONN RECAP
The CSUN softball team (22-8) defeated UCONN 7-1 in its first game at the Louisville Slugger Invitational on the campus of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. Brianna Elder tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts while Taylor Nate and Taylor Glover each collected three hits as the Matadors defeated the Huskies.Â
At 22-8, the Matadors are off to their best start through 30 games since the 1996 team went 26-4. A Concord, Calif., native, Elder turned in a strong performance in front of family and friends against the Huskies.
The senior hurler scattered four hits and three walks to earn her ninth win of the season. She is now 9-3 with a 2.08 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 91 innings of work with opponents batting just .193 off her for the season.
At the plate, the Matadors' two sophomore Taylors enjoyed a good strong game in the tournament opener. Nate was 3-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Glover went 3-for-4 and missed hitting for the cycle by a home run. She recorded her team-leading fourth triple and added her fifth double of the year in the victory.Â
Senior Kaitlin Toerner was the third Matador to finish with multi-hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Fellow senior Crystal Maas recorded her second double and sixth RBI of the season as well.Â
CSUN struck for an unearned run in the top of the second to start the scoring. With two outs, Tara Kliebenstein brought Ariana Wassmer home with an RBI single to center field. In the fourth, CSUN added to its lead with an RBI double from Maas to score Nate and an RBI single from Maylynn Mitchell that scored Aliyah Ricks.Â
After UCONN struck for its only run in the bottom of the fourth, Katie Hooper got the run back when she brought in Glover with an RBI single to right field.Â
In the sixth, Toerner scored on an error and Glover and Nate each added RBI doubles in the frame.Â
Pacific Recap
The CSUN softball team (23-8) defeated the host Tigers 4-0 in its second game of the day Friday. Zoe Conley tossed a two-hit shutout and five Matadors finished with multi-hits in the win.Â
Conley (10-3) did not have trouble finding the target in Friday's victory. She fanned five batters and walked one to post her 10th win of the season. She is now 10-3 with a 1.61 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 69.2 innings of work. Opponents are batting just .191 off Conley this season.Â
Offensively, five Matadors finished with multiple hits in the victory: Taylor Glover, Katie Hooper, Cortney Horne, Savannah Horvath and Kaitlin Toerner. Horne led all players with three hits and added a double, run scored and an RBI.
Horvath broke a scoreless tie with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, to in the bottom of the third inning. She is now tied with Hooper for the team lead with 14 extra-base hits.Â
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth, when Glover led off the frame with a double and then scored on an RBI single from Hooper.Â
In the seventh, CSUN tacked on a pair of insurance runs. Glover scored on a two-out double from Horne and and Horne then came around to score on an RBI single from Horvath.Â
Hooper is up to a team-high 35 RBIs on the season while Horvath checks in at 21 after two more against the Tigers.Â
CSUN remains in Stockton for its next three games. On Saturday, Mar. 21, the Matadors face Grand Canyon at 10 a.m. and UCONN at 12:15. CSUN wraps up the weekend with a 12:15 p.m. contest on Sunday, Mar. 22 against the host Tigers.Â
