CSUN Softball Splits Second Day in Stockton
3/21/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Grand Canyon Recap
Savannah Horvath hit a two-run home run in the first inning, but the Matadors had trouble restarting the offense in dropping a one-run decision to the Antelopes.Â
Saturday marked the fourth time CSUN and Grand Canyon met on the softball diamond in this young 2015 season. The Matadors had swept three games from the Antelopes in Phoenix, Ariz., as part of the GCU Invitational.Â
CSUN looked like it was going to move to 4-0 on the year in the series when Horvath unloaded her sixth home run of the season in the top half of the first. Katie Hooper scored on the play and CSUN led 2-0 early.Â
However, the Antelopes fought back, getting a solo home run in the bottom of the second and a two-run double in the bottom of the third. All three runs were charged to CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (2-1), who tossed 2.2 innings with three hits and two walks allowed.Â
Brianna Elder and Zoe Conley each appeared in relief for CSUN. However, the Matadors went down in order in the second, third and fourth innings. In the fifth and sixth, CSUN put runners in scoring position, but could not bring them home. In the seventh, CSUN got a single, but that was as far as the runner would get.
Connecticut Recap
The CSUN softball team (24-9) defeated UConn 8-0 in five innings behind an offense that finished with five extra-base hits, including four home runs.Â
Taylor Nate led the way with her first career triple and a solo home run in the fourth that proved to be the winning run. She is batting .337 with five home runs and 21 RBIs on the season.Â
Cortney Horne, Savannah Horvath and Katie Hooper also added home runs in the victory. Hooper is up to a team-high 10 home runs on the season while Horvath added her second two-run home run of the day. The deep fly was the second of Horne's career.
CSUN jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Nate started the frame with a triple and then scored on a fielder's choice by Taylor Glover. After a Hooper single, Glover scored on a passed ball and Horne brought home Hooper with a single. Horvath then cleared the bases with a home run to left field.Â
In the bottom of the second, Hooper and Horne went back-to-back with solo shots to left field. In the bottom of the fourth, Nate powered home the winning run with a solo blast to left as well.Â
All that offense was enough for CSUN starter Zoe Conley (11-3). The rookie worked around four hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts. She is 11-3 with a 1.48 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 75.2 innings of work this season.Â
CSUN concludes its time at the tournament Sunday with a 12:15 p.m. game against the host Pacific Tigers. The Matadors host nationally-ranked UCLA for a single game at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 26 before opening Big West Play with a three-game home series against Cal Poly from Mar. 28-29.Â
