Senior Ashlee Guay led the Matadors in scoring against Stanford, and is now the Matadors' all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 169.  On Saturday, Guay scored 27 points with four assists and three rebounds. Senior Camille Mahlknecht was next on the Matadors with eight points and six rebounds. After falling behind 8-0 to start the game and 18-5 seven minutes into the contest, the Matadors pulled off a 24-10 run to end the half and take a one-point lead into the locker room. Guay had 15 points, three assists and three steals at the break for CSUN.Â
In the second half, CSUN jumped out to a 36-30 lead two minutes into the frame. From there, Stanford went on a 24-4 run to take a 54-40 lead with just under seven minutes to play. CSUN sophomore Emily Cole ended the run with a 3-pointer and then had an old-fashioned three-point play on the Matadors' next possession.
CSUN was able to cut the lead to six points (60-54) with just under two minutes to play after a lay-up from Guay. Unfortunately, the Cardinal made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory and advance to the next round. Guay ended her CSUN career with a historic performance. She led all players with 27 points and finished the season with 544 points, the most by a CSUN player for a single season in school history. Guay ended her Matador career as the school's all-time leader in career points, steals, assists, minutes played and 3-pointers.Â
Mahlknecht finished 4-of-7 from the field and added six rebounds. She had one blocked shot and finished with a school-record 280 rejections for her career. Seniors Janae Sharpe, Cinnamon Lister and Randi Friess all played their final game as a Matador. Sharpe had four points and six rebounds, Lister had four points and two rebounds and Friess added three rebounds. As a team, CSUN shot 36.2 percent from the field compared to 51 percent for Stanford. The Cardinal held a 36-33 advantage in rebounds and had six fastbreak points.Â
Last week, CSUN knocked off UC Davis and Hawai'i to capture its second-straight Big West Tournament Championship, with senior guard Ashlee Guay earning Tournament MVP honors for the second-straight year and senior guard Janae Sharpe earning repeat honors on the All-Tournament Team.
CSUN made its third trip to the NCAA Tournament in the school's Division I era. The Matadors have represented the Big West Conference the past two years and the Big Sky Conference in the 1998-99 season. The Matadors conclude the 2014-15 season at 23-10 overall, setting a new school record for most victories in a single season regardless of NCAA Division.Â
