Matadors Fall Short in Upset Bid of No. 10 UCLA
3/26/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Although Conley (11-4) will be the losing pitcher of record, she was simply the victim of a dynamic performance from her counterpart, UCLA's Ally Carda. Appearing in relief just like Conley, Carda allowed only two CSUN hits and finished with 11 strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work. She improved to 16-3 with the victory.
Conley performed well in defeat, working around 11 hits and two walks in eight innings of relief work. She allowed a run in the fifth and seventh, but largely kept CSUN in the game with her effort. Conley is now 11-4 with a 1.51 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 83.2 innings of work in her freshman season.
Offensively, the Matadors struck for four runs and five hits in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Savannah Horvath started the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt by Cortney Horne and then stole third.
Ariana Wassmer then drove Horvath home with her seventh double and 13th RBI of the season. With two outs, Wassmer scored on an RBI double from Maylynn Mitchell. Eventually, Mitchell and Kaitlin Toerner scored on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively, to give the Matadors the lead.
UCLA inched back in to it with a run in the fifth and seventh to send the game into extra innings. The Matadors' best chance late came in the bottom of the eighth.
Taylor Glover, who had the only two Matador hits off Carda, led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Katie Hooper. Horvath then drew a walk, but Carda fanned the next two batters to end the threat.
CSUN will look to rebound Saturday when it opens Big West play with a three-game series against the Cal Poly Mustangs. The teams will play a doubleheader on Mar. 28 and a single game on Mar. 29 with both days starting at noon.
