CSUN Softball Completes First Series Sweep of Cal Poly Since 2004
3/29/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Sunday's game was the 121st between CSUN and Cal Poly in a series that dates back to 1979. The three-game sweep was the Matadors' first over the Mustangs since the 2004 season and its first home sweep in the series since the 2003 campaign.Â
Glover finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and her fifth triple of the season. With 11 triples in her career, Glover now ranks third in program history. She is batting .426 with 37 runs, 18 extra-base hits, 23 RBIs and 24 stolen bases this season.
In the circle, Elder (12-3) tossed 4.1 innings of work to post her 12th win of the season. She allowed five hits and three runs to go with two strikeouts. Elder is 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 113.2 innings of work this season.Â
Conley recorded her first career save by tossing the final 2.2 innings. She allowed four hits and two runs with a strikeout Sunday. For the season, Conley is 12-4 with a 1.50 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 93.1 innings of work.
"For the most part this weekend, we were able to play our game. We put pressure on the defense through stolen bases and bunts," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "The pitchers did a good job of keeping us in the games and while we did well in some aspects, there is still room to improve." Â
After Cal Poly struck for the game's first run on a two-out double in the second inning, CSUN scored five times in its half of the frame to take a 5-1 lead. Ariana Wassmer singled to right to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt by Madison Fleming.Â
Maylynn Mitchell then bunted for a base hit to load the bases and Daphne Pofek tied the game with a pinch-hit RBI single. Madalyne Handy then slapped a ground ball to third base, but the throw was wide at the plate and allowed Fleming and Mitchell to score.Â
With one out, Hooper was intentionally walked to load the bases and Savannah Horvath earned a tough RBI after being hit by a pitch. Handy later scored on a wild pitch to complete the Matadors' scoring in the inning.
The Mustangs got a pair of runs back in the fifth inning, chasing Elder from the circle. Conley got the second out with a strikeout and the third out was recorded when a batted ball plunked a Mustang runner trying to go to second.Â
In the sixth inning, Glover picked up a two-run single that would prove to be important. Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Kaitlin Toerner singled on the infield to start the inning. Handy advanced both with a sacrifice bunt and Glover blasted a single up the middle to score the runners.
"It is nice seeing our players learn and figure things out against a good pitcher in Sierra Hyland," Flowers added.
The runs would prove important as Cal Poly did not go quietly in the seventh inning. With two outs, the Mustangs put together two runs and three hits to close the score to 7-5. Conley settled down and ended the game on a foul out.Â
The Matadors return to action with a road series at UC Davis. On April 3, the teams will play a doubleheader and then a single game on April 4. Both days are slated to start at noon.Â
