Madeleine Sanchez's 26th goal of the season proved to be the difference maker in CSUN's (13-8, 2-0 Big West) 7-6 victory over Long Beach State (15-10, 0-1 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool.
Kelcy Barott and Marisa Young each chipped in with two goals for the Matadors, as Barott and Young stretched their season goal totals to 31 and 34 respectively for CSUN.
Kiernan Davis saved nine in the contest to push her save total to 138 on the season.
After a defensive first quarter that saw both teams score a goal each, CSUN built a lead in the second by racking up three goals to take a 5-2 lead after two quarters.
After a low scoring 1-1 third quarter, the Matadors found themselves ahead 6-3 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The lead would evaporate, however, as LBSU scored three straight goals to tie the match with 1:30 to play.
With CSUN on a 6-5 advantage, Sanchez put the Matadors ahead with a go-ahead goal on the right side of the attack. On the final possession of the match, a potential LBSU tying shot was blocked by Young in front of her goal to preserve the 7-6 victory.
The Matadors return to action with a Sunday match against visiting UC Irvine. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Matador Pool.
