SEATTLE, Wash. --- The CSUN softball team (17-5) lost 9-8 to No. 19 Washington Friday night in a non-conference game as part of the Husky Classic. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Matadors rallied for five runs to take an 8-4 lead. However, Washington responded with five in its half of the seventh to take the see-saw affair.Â
The top of the seventh looked like it would lift CSUN to the dramatic victory. Maylynn Mitchell singled to start the inning, Carissa Sherman singled as well and Taylor Glover walked to load the bases. Katie Hooper singled to tie the game and Taylor Nate delivered a bases-clearing double to give CSUN a 7-4 advantage.
Nate would come around to score on an RBI double from Savannah Horvath, her second two-base hit of the game. Coupling with an RBI sacrifice fly, Nate had a career-high four RBIs in the contest.Â
However, the momentum rolled over to Washington's at-bats in the bottom half of the inning. The Huskies took advantage of an error and collected a two-out, two-run single to win the game. Both runs that scored on the play were unearned.Â
Zoe Conley (8-3) took the loss for CSUN despite a strong effort against the nationally ranked Huskies. She allowed 10 hits and five earned runs to go with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. Brianna Elder replaced her for the last two batters of the game.Â
Glover started things quickly for the Matadors, blasting a solo home run on a 0-2 pitch in the top of the first inning. The deep fly was her third home run of the season and she finished 2-for-2 with two walks.Â
After Washington tied the game in the second, the Matadors pulled ahead in the third. Sherman and Glover singled to start the frame and after moving up a base, Sherman scored on Nate's sac fly.
Washington struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 4-2. In the sixth, CSUN struck for a run when Nate walked and Horvath brought her home with a double. For the season, Horvath has a team-high seven doubles.Â
The Matadors return to action on Saturday with two games at the 2015 Husky Classic. CSUN faces Seattle at 12:30 p.m. and Ohio State at 2:45 p.m.Â
