SEATTLE, Wash. --- The CSUN softball team (18-6) defeated Seattle University 8-0 in six innings and lost 5-3 to Ohio State in nine innings Saturday at the Husky Classic.
Seattle Recap
The CSUN softball team (18-5) defeated Seattle University 8-0 in six innings in Seattle, Wash. at the 2015 Husky Classic. Senior Brianna Elder tossed a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and sophomore Katie Hooper smacked her team-leading ninth home run of the season as the Matadors totaled 11 hits against the Redhawks.Â
The Matadors finished with five extra-base hits in the win over Seattle. Taylor Nate and Ariana Wassmer each had a double and Taylor Glover and Kaitlin Toerner each had a triple. Hooper's home run, a two-run shot, increased her season RBI total to a team-best 28.
That was more than enough for Elder (7-1), who yielded just four base runners for the game. After a single and a walk to start the game, she fanned the next three batters in the first inning to set the tone. She has held opponents to a .199 batting average in 61 innings this season.Â
CSUN struck for five runs in the second inning. With one out, Wassmer doubled and Maylynn Mitchell was hit by a pitch. Toerner brought them both home with her first career triple as a Matador. After Carissa Sherman singled, Glover brought Toerner home with an RBI groundout and Hooper homered to score Sherman and clear the bases.Â
In the fifth inning, the Matadors added a pair of runs to stretch their lead. Savannah Horvath singled and moved all the way to third when Tara Kliebenstein's bunt was misplayed by the Seattle second baseman.Â
Wassmer scored Horvath on an RBI groundout and Aliyah Ricks picked up a pinch-hit RBI single to score Kliebenstein.Â
The Matadors sealed the victory in the sixth when Glover led off the inning with her second triple of the year and then scored on a passed ball.Â
Ohio State Recap
The CSUN softball team (18-6) lost 5-3 in nine innings to the Ohio State Buckeyes in its second game Saturday at the 2015 Husky Classic.Â
The Matadors led 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth. However, Ohio State tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth and then blasted a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to claim the extra-inning victory.Â
Ariana Wassmer went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a career-high three RBIs. Her double was her sixth of the season, which trails only Savannah Horvath.
The rookie from Las Vegas, Nev. picked up two more doubles in Saturday's game with Ohio State to give her a team-leading nine on the season. She also scored a run in the loss.Â
Brianna Elder (7-2) took the loss for CSUN despite a strong performance. Appearing in relief of Zoe Conley in the first inning, Elder tossed eight innings of relief work to go with two strikeouts. She surrendered only two earned runs and had two strikeouts.Â
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, CSUN cut the lead in half with a Wassmer RBI single to score Horvath in the second.Â
The Buckeyes' 2-1 lead held until the sixth, when Cortney Horne walked and was replaced by Selina Tajalle as a pinch-runner. Wassmer roped a double to score Tajalle and tie the game.Â
In the top of the eighth, Taylor Nate drew a walk to start the inning. Horvath reached on a fielder's choice and then moved to second and third on a Horne groundout. Wassmer brought Nate home with a bunt single, but Horvath and Wassmer would be stranded in scoring position.
CSUN closes out its time at the Husky Classic with a 1:30 p.m. game against No. 19 Washington on Sunday, Mar. 8.Â
