SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (13-4, 4-2 Big West) defeated Cal Poly 4-3 in a Big West Conference match. The Matadors won the doubles point in a tiebreaker and Criss Rodriguez, Jessica Warren and Kristen Poei all captured singles wins to lift the Matadors to an important road victory.Â
With the Big West Tournament in Indian Wells, Calif. just a few weeks away, the Matadors picked up some momentum with a gritty 4-3 victory over the rival Mustangs.Â
"Today was a tough, hard win for our team. Cal Poly is an extremely talented team that has had a slew of injuries. They were full strength today and really pushed us to the brink today," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said.Â
In doubles play, Mickey Hsu and Poei improved to 14-3 on the season with an 8-5 victory. In the third doubles draw, Warren and Rodriguez secured an 8-7 (6) victory to give the Matadors the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles action, Cal Poly won the top three singles matches to move within one point of clinching the match. However, CSUN's fourth-sixth players stood tall and persevered to give CSUN the match victory.
Warren won in straight sets in the fifth draw to improve to 11-2 in singles action in 2015. Poei's three-set victory in the sixth draw actually tied the match at 3-3. Rodriguez then also won in three sets to clinch the match for CSUN. Rodriguez is now 13-3 on the year while Poei is 12-3 in singles.Â
"Criss and Jessica fought back from down 3-6 and then continued their outstanding seasons with strong performances in singles. Mickey and Kristen also played well in doubles and singles and Vivian and Ki also rallied from an early deficit in doubles to make it close. We know that we have to scratch and claw for everything we get," Victor added.Â
The Matadors return to action on Sunday, April 12 with a home match against UC Irvine. First serve from the Matador Tennis Complex and Jim Gorman Court is slated for 11 a.m.Â
