NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (14-4, 5-2 Big West) defeated UC Irvine 4-3 in a Big West Conference match at Matador Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon. After dropping the doubles point, the Matadors rallied for four wins in singles play, punctuated by Kristen Poei's three-set victory in the fifth draw to seal the victory.
The Matadors turned in another impressive performance against a nationally-ranked foe in UC Irvine. The Anteaters, Matadors and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are all now 5-2 in Big West standings. CSUN hosts Hawai'i on Sunday, April 19 at noon on Senior Day.
"Today was a true character test for our team against an outstanding squad," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "Mickey has been playing great tennis lately and earned it today. Criss, Kristen and Jessica have been the backbone of the team this season and came through again in big moments today."
Poei captured the winning point with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the fifth draw. She is now 13-3 in singles play on the season. Jessica Warren was the first to finish in singles play, winning in straight sets in the No. 6 match. She is now 12-2 on the season in singles play.
In the top singles match, Mickey Hsu coasted to a straight-set victory. She is 11-7 on the season in singles play. Senior Criss Rodriguez took a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory in the third draw to improve to a team-best 14-3 on the season.
UC Irvine jumped out to a 1-0 lead after doubles play, winning the first two matches to finish. From there, Warren, Rodriguez and Hsu made it 3-2 before Poei came through with the winning point in the final singles match to conclude the action.
