NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Tim Snyder and Steven Molumby are both tied for 11th and the CSUN men's golf team is tied for fifth place after the opening round of the Big West Championship Sunday at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
In windy conditions, the Matadors posted a team round of 298 to tie with Long Beach State for fifth place. UC Riverside is first through 18 holes as the Highlanders carded a round of 286. UC Davis (288) is second, Cal Poly (289) and UC Irvine (289) share third while CSUN and Long Beach State round out the top five.
"It's a difficult golf course and the conditions were tough today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We played well and battled throughout the round but too many three putts hurt us. Hopefully we'll learn from today. We've played three rounds on this course now so it's time to close the gap."
Through one round, the Matadors have a pair in the top 11 as Tim Snyder and Steven Molumby share 11th place at three-over 73. Snyder, who led CSUN with 15 pars, was one-over on the front nine after a bogey on the fifth hole and then had bogeys at 14 and 18 to finish at three-over. Molumby was two-over on the front and had a birdie and two bogeys on the back for his 73.
Michael O'Connor and Aden Louez are tied for 27th at six-over 76 as each player matched Molumby with a pair of birdies. Joey Varnam rounded out the Matador quintet as he is tied for 40th at 10-over 80.
The Matadors tee off the second round Monday morning at 9 a.m. CSUN is paired again with Hawaii and Cal State Fullerton.
